Research [2003] confirms there is a general consensus that a range of positive outcomes may be achieved by physically demanding programmes for young people at risk of offending. Demanding physical activity programmes are those which have regular, planned opportunities for participation in activities such as ‘outdoor adventure activities’, ‘ sport’ (both indoor and outdoor) and ‘physical recreation’ (e.g. walking, expeditions).
This study included:
• a national survey - this identified the scale of such programmes in the Probation Service
• case studies - ten programmes were examined in detail to identify key features in the way programmes were run.

Editor's comments - [ These findings outline Probation Service programmes which use demanding physical activities for young offenders. In addition, ten programmes were examined in detail to evaluate the perceived purpose and effectiveness of the programmes. ] Reference this?Cryer, J. (Year). This page title in italics.
