In September 2000, a new joint initiative – the School Sport Coordinators (SSCo) programme – was launched by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
With Sport England Lottery funding to support posts, and DfES funding to provide a national education and training programme, 33 new School Partnerships were established in some of the most disadvantaged areas of England. Their role was to manage a new breed of physical education (PE) and sport specialists – the School Sport Coordinators.
This evaluation summary highlights the achievements of the School Sport Coordinators programme as a result of its emphasis on flexibility, creativity and cooperation, and the lessons learned so far.
