"The national strategy for sport [Scotland], published in 1998, was updated in March 2003. It gives direction and sets eleven targets to widen opportunities, develop potential and achieve excellence in sport.Three of these targets relate directly to those involved in sport in higher education.
Many institutes of higher education are making important contributions to the development of sport at local and national levels because they have excellent staff, first-rate facilities and responsive programmes. For example, 65,000 visits are made to universities' sports facilities each week, they have 475 sports clubs and eight universities provide services to athletes who are members of Area Institutes of Sport. However, provision is not consistent across the country, existing examples of good practice are hidden from view and students' sporting achievements go largely unrecognised. Consequently, the sector's potential is under-developed.
This high level document sets out the direction to enable Scotland's institutes of higher education to contribute fully to the updated national strategy for sport. It provides a framework, pragmatic aspirations and action for providers of sport in higher education and new partners to deliver relevant aspects of Scotland's plans for sport over the next four years."
