"Sport and Recreation New Zealand was formed in February 2002 following the merger of the Hillary Commission, the New Zealand Sports Foundation and the policy arm of the Office of Tourism and Sport. The merged organisation has been undergoing significant change, including a major strategic planning exercise to define how it will go forward.
This document signals the strategy for the new organisation with a new brand name and a whole new way of doing business.
SPARC is just one part of the jigsaw, albeit an important one. We accept the responsibility to provide leadership. We recognise that to succeed we will need to bring with us organisations as diverse as schools, clubs, regional sports trusts, local government and district health boards as well as national and regional sporting organisations. That won't be easy because we will all need to change.
'Our Vision, Our Direction' lays out the path ahead for SPARC and, as we see it, the beginning of a framework for the sport and physical recreation sector. It sets a four-year timeframe, even though the benefits may take 20 years to realise."
Policy directions in New Zealand sport are not dissimilar to that of the UK and represent a useful mirror [in part] for United Kingdom policy and initiatives.
