positive futures

Evaluation of positive futures-Survey of partner agencies and community organisations

description

Positive Futures was launched in March 2000, as part of the Blair government's overarching aim to tackle social exclusion

Positive Futures is a national sports based social inclusion programme managed within the Home Office Drugs Strategy Directorate with an advisory group made up of representatives from the Department of Health, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Connexions (Department for Education and Skills), Sport England, the Youth Justice Board and the Football Foundation.

Positive Futures is a relationship strategy based on the principle that engagement through sport and the building of mutual respect and trust can provide cultural 'gateways' to alternative lifestyles. Within the individual projects sport acts as a catalyst for bringing people with similar experiences and a shared interest together, within a supportive environment where secure opportunities are provided and participants are encouraged to make decisions for themselves.

This report presents the findings of a telephone survey of Positive Futures partner agencies conducted by MORI (Market Research & Opinion International) on behalf of the Home Office, in the document the authors suggest that  "sport has a clear 'social dimension' in the function it plays in Positive Futures. It is seen mainly as a means of engaging young people, diverting them from anti-social behaviour."
