Studies on education and sport: Sport and multiculturalism

description

"PMP, in partnership with the Institute of Sport and Leisure Policy (ISLP), Loughborough University, was appointed by the European Commission in December 2003 to carry out two studies on education and sport. Both of the studies were commissioned by the Sport Unit of DG Culture and Education and are part of the broad initiative of the European Year of Education through Sport 2004.

This report relates to a study on the role of sport in promoting multicultural understanding, the previous on sport and education. The brief for the project described the focus as:

'The contribution of sport, as an instrument of non-formal education, to the multicultural dialogue between young people, and the part it plays in promoting the integration of recent migratory flows'.

A team of researchers from the ISLP/PMP has been supported by a group of expert advisors drawn from organisations in the UK that work extensively in the area of sport and multicultural constituencies.

In undertaking this study, the team has liaised with partner researchers to carry out secondary research across all 25 European Union Member States in order to provide a comprehensive picture of the current situation in Europe. In addition, the UK, France, Germany and Poland were selected for comparative primary research, which provides the basis for more in-depth commentary in this final report.

The aim of the study has been to identify the range of approaches to the use of sport to promote intercultural understanding in the 25 Member States, and, where possible, to provide evidence of good practice as a base for policy recommendations.
