The Sports Equity Index assesses the extent of social inequities in participation in sport and active recreation in England.
The Index draws on statistical information provided by the General Household Survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics and Sport England's Young People and Sport Surveys carried out by MORI. It provides an analysis of the relative propensity of different groups within the population to take part in sport.
By establishing a standardised index it provides a new perspective and a fascinating insight into the social demography of sport that enables us to clearly distinguish between the sporting 'haves' and sporting 'have nots' in our society.
By comparing statistics between 1996 and 2002 the Index provides a unique insight into those groups that are experiencing increased inequities and those where the gap may be narrowing
