"In 1999 the Government's Social Exclusion Unit's Policy Action Team on sport and the arts (PAT 10) recommended that sport should be used to help combat social exclusion (now referred to as 'social inclusion'). Nationally the Sport Action Zone initiative is a proactive initiative from Sport England in direct response to the need to address sporting deprivation in some of the most socially and economically deprived areas of the country.
The Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Sport Action Zone (the SAZ) has two roles; one is to help to develop communities through sport and active recreation and the other is to assist with the strategic development of sport and active recreation. It also has a potential role to play to assist with development of the local economy by developing the Area's special and unique character through support for culturally significant activities.
The SAZ Needs Assessment will begin to identify what this could mean for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (i.e., what the SAZ will do, what it will achieve, its priorities and how it will be developed)."
