"There is a growing concern - articulated through the media, the public and, to some extent, within sport itself - that the 'conduct' of professional sportsmen and women is not as good as it ought to be – indeed, that it is in decline. In order to gain a more objective appreciation of this concern, and to help begin a dialogue about ethical issues with players, coaches, officials and others, UK Sport decided early in 2001, that it was important to develop a sense of the wider perception of values in sport and sporting conduct. This research focuses on spectators' perceptions of the values and norms of sporting conduct in four high-profile professional sports: football, cricket, tennis and golf."
