Active Sports Mid Term Report: October 2002

Active sport link

description

"Active Sports was initially designed as a five-year development programme. The first phase of Active Sports Managers received their induction training in October 1999. This report highlights the progress made in the first three years. It also identifies the issues now facing the programme and the agency considered in the best position to tackle each of these issues

AIM

Active Sports aims to help young people with the ability and the desire to improve their sporting skills through a co-ordinated programme across England that will provide access to organised sport

Objectives

  • To identify and support innovative approaches and action for ensuring the benefits are equally accessible to all young people with the ability and desire to progress in sport, including: women; disabled people; black, Asian and other ethnic minorities; and those living in designated priority/disadvantaged areas
  • To co-ordinate and improve coaching and competitive opportunities for young people
  • To create and support local assessment and development squads in specific sports
  • To develop and support high quality junior clubs or sections for juniors in existing clubs
  • To increase both the number and quality of coaches working with young people at different levels
  • To increase both the number and quality of officials working with young people at different levels
  • To increase both the number and quality of volunteer helpers working with and on behalf of young people
  • To provide a range of specialist services for young people, parents, coaches, officials and volunteers to support the development of Active Sports at national and local levels

Active Sports has been the 'trigger' and 'development tool' for local authorities and NGBs to work effectively together, many for the first time. Their value is beginning to be recognised."
